How Much StateTaxes Must be Held by your Employer?
State tax is deducted by your employer regardless of your visa type and duration of stay. The amount of the state tax varies by state but is in the range of 3% -7% of your gross income.The following states do not have individual income tax: Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
Depending on your nationality, state worked, gross income, and taxes paid you can claim some or all of your state tax back.

Do not Forget
To determine the amount of state tax you have paid, please see box 17 of your W2 form. If you worked for more than one employer you have to add the state tax withheld by each.
