Your refund comes straight from the IRS, to your account or a check in your name. It never goes through me. If you're already back home, no problem: it's all done remotely.

¿eres una de esas “agencias” de taxes?are you one of those tax “agencias”?

no. empecé por culpa de ellas.

no. i started because of them.

In 2023 and 2024 I worked in Hawaii with J-1 students. I'd studied accounting, so I started helping them with their taxes. Several friends had been scammed by “agencias” that promised a refund and disappeared. I helped them fix it in exchange for lunch, they recommended me, and it grew from there.

They charge a % of your refund.A fair price is fixed, and you know it from the start.
They want the refund sent to their account. The refund always goes to your own account or a check in your name.
They promise far more than your friends got. It's almost always credits you don't qualify for. Later the IRS makes you pay it back, with penalties.
They won't give you a copy of what they filed.Always ask for your full copy. Without it you don't know what was filed in your name.

already happened to you? Send me a copy of what they filed and we'll see what was done in your name.

¿cómo funciona?how does it work?

You message me on WhatsApp and I tell you the price.
You pay up front (Zelle or PayPal; if you're in Peru, also BCP in dollars or Yape) and send me your documents: upload them encrypted at j1taxes.com/subir, or send photos in the chat.
I send you your return. I don't file anything until you've checked it and given me the OK.
  4. La presento y te mando tu copia.I file it and send you your copy.

I know paying first is scary, especially if a friend had trouble with an agencia. The difference: the refund goes from the IRS straight to you, so the only thing you pay me is the $80.

Only very complicated cases cost more, and I tell you before I start. Amended returns (1040-X), past years and IRS letters: I quote based on your case.

Without seeing your case I can't give you a number, and don't trust anyone who promises one without seeing it. What you can see is where it comes from: get out your W-2.

The best option is direct deposit to a US bank account in your name. If you no longer have one there, it can be a joint account with a family member you trust, as long as your name is on the account too.

E-filed refunds usually arrive in under 21 days. Track it at irs.gov/wheres-my-refund.

Without a US account: the IRS sends you a letter (CP53E) and later a check to your address. It's the slowest, international mail sometimes gets lost, and you need a dollar account to cash it (in Peru, for example, you book an appointment at BCP).

ya pasaron 3 semanas y nada. ¿llamo al IRS?it's been 3 weeks and nothing. should i call the IRS?

Después me mandas tus notas.

Yes. Have your return in front of you, because they'll ask for your name, SSN, date of birth and address exactly as shown.

  • From the US: 800-829-1040 (Mon–Fri, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.).
  • From another country: 267-941-1000 (Mon–Fri, 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Eastern). In Peru, from Movistar or Claro you can call a US number for free.

In the menu choose “individual” and say “account status”. When you get a person, ask: “what is the reason for the delay in processing my [year] return?” Don't only ask about the refund, or they'll send you to the recording.

Write down everything they say so you remember, please: the date, the agent's name or ID, and what you need to do. Then send me your notes.

Don't ignore it. Send me photos of every page, and the envelope. Look at the number in the top right (for example 5071C) and the deadline. Many letters just ask you to confirm the return is yours. Don't call any number that isn't on the letter or on irs.gov.

¿y el “bono” de estudiante?what about the student “bono”?

It's the American Opportunity Credit. It's possible, but it's unlikely you qualify: it only applies if you're a tax resident for the whole year and paid tuition at a school approved for US federal student aid (some abroad are). The IRS checks it closely and can hold your refund for months asking for proof.

If you think you qualify, send me your school's name and your receipts and we'll look at it.

¿1040 o 1040-NR?1040 or 1040-NR?

It depends on your visa and your days in the US, not on which gives more. Most J-1s in their first years are nonresidents: 1040-NR, with Form 8843. Many H-2 workers with 183+ days are residents: 1040. You can check it under your W-2.

¿por qué a veces salgo a pagar?why do i sometimes owe?

On a 1040-NR there's no standard deduction, but many employers withhold as if there were. If you owe, it's paid before April 15 to avoid penalties. For your next job I'll help with your W-4 so it doesn't happen again.

¿también tengo que declarar en el estado?do i also file in the state?

Depende. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington y Wyoming no cobran impuesto al sueldo.

It depends. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming don't tax wages. The rest usually do, and there's often a refund. It's included in the $80.

¿esto afecta mi visa?will this affect my visa?

I'm not an immigration lawyer, so I can't advise on that. What I do is file what's right for your case, which is the safest way to avoid problems later.
